Globalstar's satellite-based services will enable customers to make and receive phone calls, short messages, and in the near future, email and other data practically anywhere in the world.

Globalstar USA owns and operates the land-based portion of the Globalstar network throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. This includes gateways (which switch calls to and from the satellite to the land-based public switched telephone network)

located in Clifton, Texas; Smith Falls, Ontario, Canada; High River, Alberta, Canada; and San Martin-Texmelucan, Mexico. The company also operates an interconnection network between the gateways for transmission of internal data.

In the United States, operating under the name Globalstar USA, the company will use its wireless expertise and history to market Globalstar phones and service to customers through an extensive network of distributors, including agents and resellers. In addition to establishing pricing structures in its designated markets, Globalstar USA will develop and maintain billing and customer care operations.

Globalstar USA will make Globalstar service commercially available to customers in the United States in the first quarter of 2000 and on a limited basis beginning in the fourth quarter of 1999.

Global Mobile Personal Communications by Satellite
No longer restricted to high-end use by cost or form, satellite phones are now more affordable and practical for a wide user base, empowering people to send and receive calls virtually anywhere in the world. Customers will have access to the Globalstar system with single handsets, weighing less than 13 ounces, or fixed phones. In the very near future, users will be able to send and receive email, data and fax information over the same handsets and fixed phones.

Among those who stand to benefit most from the use of satellite-based communications:

  • Vertical market industries, such as:
      The maritime industry, including cruise lines, yachts, commercial freight and fishing vessels to navigate the seas and communicate with those on land;

      The transportation industry, including aviation, trucking, auto fleet and rental groups and railroads, to verify routes and stay connected;

      The oil & gas industry, including off-shore drilling rigs and remote drilling locations, to report progress and discuss operations.

  • The media covering news in remote areas of the globe.
  • Individuals living in remote areas not covered by existing land or cellular networks; also individuals in countries with insufficient telecommunications systems.
  • Organizations involved in disaster recovery or other relief operations to relay crucial information and requests for supplies.
  • Outdoor sports enthusiasts such as hikers, cross country skiers and campers who need to stay connected with their home base.
  • The global business traveler who needs to stay connected around the world.
